Summer Camps 2023

We are delighted to, once again, be able to offer a variety of Summer Camps in August.

Our Junior camps offer children aged 7-12 years old, a multi-event session. Teaching the fundamentals of athletics - RUN | JUMP | THROW - in a fun, youth friendly format.

Sprint camps give athletes in all sports (athletics, football, rugby etc) the opportunity to develop their speed. The basics of acceleration, maximum velocity running and conditioning for speed development will be delivered by our Performance Coach.

Pole Vault camps are for beginner to intermediate pole vaulters, aged 12+. Athletes will learn the basic skills and techniques of pole vault with our Lead Pole Vault Coach.



Junior Camps - Tuesday 1st August, Wednesday 2nd August, Tuesday 22nd August, Wednesday 23rd August.

12pm - 3pm. Outdoor athletics track, Brunel Sports Park.


Sprint Camps - Wednesday 2nd August & Wednesday 23rd August.

12pm - 3pm. Outdoor athletics track, Brunel Sports Park.


Pole Vault Camps - Tuesday 8th August & Tuesday 22nd August.

4pm - 6pm. Indoor Athletics Track, Brunel University.

Easter Camps 2023

We are delighted to be able to offer our Easter Camps for 2023.

There are 3 camps available - Juniors (age 7-12); Speed (age 12-18); Pole Vault (age 12+)

Junior Camps - These 2 day camps are for athletes aged 7-12 years old. Athletes will enjoy multi-event sessions designed to teach the fundamentals of Athletics (running, jumping, and throwing), in a bespoke youth friendly format

Speed Camp - This action packed 1 day camp is for track and field athletes aged 12+ years who want to develop their speed. Athletes will learn about acceleration, maximum velocity running and conditioning for sprinters.

Poole Vault Camp - Our pole vault camp is perfect for the beginner / intermediate pole vaulter. Athletes will learn the basic techniques of pole vault from our Lead Pole Vault Coach.

We are delighted to be able to offer our Summer Camps again for 2022. Our Junior and Speed Camps have been a hit in previous years, giving athletes a taste of what our squads experience at our sessions each week.

MEET THE TEAM

Laura has a level 5 diploma in Sports and Remedial Massage. She joined the WLTF team in September 2021 to further develop her experience and keen interest in athletics.

Laura works in private practise with a particular interest in injury rehabilitation. She enjoys supporting both elite and recreational athletes to meet their specific performance goals and targets. Laura also works at Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club aiding players in recovery and rehabilitation.

We asked Laura a few quick-fire questions.

What attracted you to WLTF?

I wanted to work with a forward looking, successful athlete focussed team, providing beneficial treatment and education to young athletes.

What is your super-strength?

Multi tasking – 3 children, career ambitions and personal athletics goals requires lots of doubling up! It is possible to shower, do your calf raises and listen to your child read Biff and Chip all at once. Being sane is overrated and boring.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I want to continue to learn and develop as a therapist whilst keeping my children alive as well as my house plants!

What else should we know about you?

I am a Master 1500m champion and juggle motherhood (looking after 3 young children) with training and pursuing my career as a soft tissue therapist. Tea and cake is always the answer!

MEET THE TEAM

We are back for our 2nd “Meet the Team” feature. This week we meet James Collins.

James is a man of many talents, currently undertaking a PhD degree in the Sports Science field having already gained two MSc degrees in Strength & Conditioning and Sports Rehabilitation, and a BSc degree in Sports Science. He is also a certified Sports Nutritionist, thereby able to cover all bases. James’ background has been as a Strength and Conditioning Coach with GB skiers, world renowned entertainers and CEO’s. With his Sports Rehab degree he has added clinic room care to fully complement his holistic approach to training athletes.

We asked James a few quick-fire questions

What attracted you to WLTF?

To be able to work with world class practitioners and athletes. To be able to be under the guidance of Laura and Ciaran was an opportunity I couldn’t let pass, their wealth of knowledge can only enhance my skills

What is your super-strength?

I feel my strength is that I can wear many hats, covering many departments. Therefore, I can assist in most aspects of an athletes development.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition is to keep learning and working with exceptional practitioners and athletes to enhance my own abilities so that I can provide better coaching and care.

What else should we know about you?

  • I actually enjoy running marathons as opposed to sprinting like the athletes at WLTF.

  • This is my second career after first being in the fashion industry in New York.

  • I’m awesome ……

MEET THE TEAM

Welcome to the first in our series of ‘Meet the Team” where we will introduce the new members to our team for the 2021-22 season. First up we have Joe, our Strength & Conditioning Coach.

Joe is a graduate in Sport, Health and Exercise Science with Business studies BSc where he gained knowledge to support his goal of being a future Strength and Conditioning Coach. During his time at university, he completed a Level 3 Personal Training Diploma and has successfully worked as a PT ever since: as well as gaining Level 4 Strength and Conditioning qualification during this time.

What attracted you to WLTF?

I heard of WLTF during my final year at university. I had been looking for an opportunity to get my foot into the door in the S&C world. The internship that WLTF was offering was ideal for me as it provided a pathway into S&C for athletes. I was interested in WLTF specifically because of the dedicated and experienced coaches I would be working with and the opportunity for progression within the company. 

 What is your super-strength?

My super strength has and will always be my ability to remain calm in most if not all the situations I have been in whether good or bad. I can’t tell you where I got it from or when it began, but I am glad it’s a part of me because it helps me easily deal with stressful situations. 

 What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition for the future is to become an accredited S&C coach. I would like to train athletes from different backgrounds and sports to increase my knowledge and expertise. In the distant, but hopefully not too distant future, I would also like to open a S&C studio/facility where I can use this knowledge to train athletes and others who want to train like one. 

 What else should we know about you?

Anything that includes action or adventure, sign me up. I enjoy the rush and the sense of accomplishment it gives me. However, I also like to try new things no matter how far outside of my comfort zone it is. I’m a big fan of music, both listening to and playing it; and I enjoy being social and being around others.

We are delighted to welcome Parris Johnson onto our WLTF staff as Communications Manager

Parris has been a member of WLTF for 3 years, training with Lead Coach Laura Turner-Alleyne. Parris has successfully completed a year-long Marketing and Communications Internship with London Sport and will now finish the final year of her Sport Science degree. Parris is also a successful Sports Model working with Forte Model Management.

Laura Turner-Alleyne said of the new appointment “ I am really pleased to have Parris on board to grow this branch of WTLF. She has the skill-set and personal attributes that fit in well with our values and culture.”

Sprints & Hurdles Squads 2019-2020

Sprints & Hurdles Squads 2019-2020

We are delighted to open our squads to more athletes for the 2019-20 season. The squads below cater for sprinters and hurdlers aged 12 and upwards. Keep reading for more information and contact details.

Bronze squad - Monday 6pm, Wednesday 6pm, Saturday 10am.

Lead Coach - Charlie Craddock; Strength & Conditioning Coach - Antonia Gregoriou

This squad caters for sprinters 16 years and older. Athletes will learn the mechanics of acceleration and maximal velocity running with an individualised training programme designed to maximise development and performance. Charlie and Antonia prepare athletes for competition over 100m-400m for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Development Squads - option for one or two sessions per week

  • Hurdles - Wednesday 5.30pm, Saturday 9am. Coaches - Laura Turner-Alleyne & James Weaver.

    This squad caters for athletes aged 12 years and older. Athletes will develop their hurdle technique, rhythm and speed under the watchful eye of Laura Turner-Alleyne and GB International hurdler, James Weaver. Laura and James have been working together for 4 years. Athletes will learn the warm up, conditioning and training philosophies that have helped James reach a World Junior Final and two European U23 finals in the 110m Hurdles. We welcome sprint and long hurdlers.

  • Sprints - Wednesday 6pm, Saturday 9.30am. Lead Coach - Luke Sargeant

    This squad caters for athletes aged 12-16 years old. Athletes will develop their speed and acceleration using the tried and testing training methods employed by all coaches at WLTF. Luke has been with WLTF for four years, consistently running PB’s over both the 100m and 200m. This squad would suit athletes competing in track and field as well as team sport athletes looking to improve their speed.

Athletes are able to chose one session per week or two sessions a week, there is also the option to chose one sprints and one hurdles session per week.

New Development Sprints Squad

New Development Sprints Squad

We are delighted to launch our new Development Sprints Squad. The squad will cater for athletes aged 12-16 years old and is a stepping stone between the Juniors and Performance Squads.

The squad train every Wednesday at 6pm in the Brunel Indoor Athletics Centre. Sessions are led by Coach Luke who has been member of WLTF for 5 years. Luke is also a college lecturer which gives him a unique skill set; working with athletes of this age along with being part of the WLTF Sprints Squad and experiencing the training system first hand.

Our Development squad will learn the mechanics of sprinting while refining their speed and laying the foundation of conditioning required for performance. The sessions would suit track and field athletes and also team sport athletes (football, rugby etc). Athletes have the opportunity to progress to a Performance Squad.

WLTF launches new Sprints & Hurdles Squad

WLTF launches new Sprints & Hurdles Squad for U15, U17 & U20 athletes.

Following the ongoing success of the current squads, Lead Coach Laura Tuner-Alleyne is delighted to now expand the team of coaches working with West London Track & Field’s Sprinters and Hurdlers. 

The new squad will train 3 days a week (Monday & Wednesday 6pm, Saturday 10am) at Brunel University. Track and gym sessions will be programmed with the individual in mind and supervised throughout. With speed at the heart of the training programme, Laura and her team will ensure athletes develop technical mastery, as well as the physical and mental prerequisites for success.

The coaching team has been hand-picked to ensure the WLTF core values are at the heart of the squad, and will be tasked with the delivery of a comprehensive, individualised programme, designed to maximise long term athlete development:

West London Track & Field are delighted to offer an excellent opportunity for sprinters and hurdlers to open their 2018 season at our Indoor Sprints Evening.

Come and join us at the West London Track & Field Indoor Sprints Evening. A perfect season opener. 

INFORMATION

  • Electronic timing

  • Entry fee £8 (£6 for WTLF athletes and Brunel Students, £2 to be refunded on the day)

  • Two rounds of open graded sprints and hurdles races

  • Pre-entry and entries on the day accepted (limited spaces available)

  • Entries are non-refundable and non-exchangeable

  • Athletes must register/pick up their numbers AT LEAST 60mins before the start of Round 1. NO LATE ENTRIES ACCEPTED

Indoor Season Review 2018 - Sprints & Hurdles

With the World Indoor Championships coming to an end on Sunday, the indoor season is officially over. We take a look back at how the Sprints & Hurdles squad performed.

 

UK Indoor Championships

Jack Kirby ran a personal best time of 8.06s to make the Men's 60m Hurdle final.

Steph Clitheroe missed the Women's 60m Hurdle final by one thousandth of a second, after running a seasons best time in the heats. 

 

England U17 & U20 Championships

Finlay Marriot fought hard to make the U20 Women's 60m Hurdle final where she finished 6th in a seasons best time (8.82s). 

Chante Williams ran 2 personal best times (8.81s) to make the U17 Girls 60m Hurdles final. 

Parris Johnson ran a 200m personal best time in the 200m (25.32s), beating her previous outdoor best.

 

British University Championships

Marvin Popoola had a busy weekend winning bronze in the Men's 200m in a personal best time (21.52s). Two days before, Marvin had run his quickest 60m time in 3 years (6.82s) to finish an agonising 4th place in the Men's 60m. 

Modupe Shokunbi ran a huge personal best of 7.57s in the Women's 60m to make the final, where she also finished in 4th place.

Reece Young ran a seasons best time in the Men's 60m Hurdles (8.13s) to make the final. 

Max Schopp ran an indoor personal best of 49.66s in the Men's 400m semi final.

 

As well as these brilliant championship performances, Jahde Williams, Lara Pleace and Emily Russell all ran personal best times in the 60m (6.96s, 7.86s) and 60m Hurdles (8.76s) respectively. 

 

The squad is now back in training, preparing for the outdoor season which begins in May.

Sprints & hurdles squad escape to the sun

The start of the year saw the full-time sprints and hurdles squad travel to Tenerife for some warm weather training. Although we had been to Tenerife many times before for training camps, we had never been in January.

As an athlete, I would travel to South Africa or Doha to train in January. It was always such a nice break from the cold of London and good to get your mind and body ready for an indoor season. So, when some of the athletes asked about going to Tenerife in January, I decided it would be beneficial and that they were ready to add this into their training year.

There were only 4 athletes who travelled, along with Gareth (Therapist) and myself. A nice small group. We arrived midday on the Thursday, which is usually our rest day. I was sharing a room with Clieo and Steph, Gareth shared with James and Jahde. I thought a lot about whether these living arrangements would work, but decided to give it a go as it was only a 10-day camp. I certainly had an interesting time listening to and being part of (sometimes) the conversations between the girls; a brilliant mix of laughter and eye-opening insight into the youth of today. They made me feel really old. Gareth enjoyed reliving his youth spending hours playing FIFA, regularly beating James and Jahde (they may tell a different story).

Three out of the 4 athletes had been to Tenerife before so we were able to settle in quickly and get straight to work. Gareth checked everyone over once we had unpacked to make sure they could hit the ground running for 10 days of good training. We went to look at a new gym which has recently opened, it was very well equipped and set in an amazing location where we were overlooking the sea. I was pleasantly surprised with the weather. The forecast had said 18-20 degrees but it was warmer than that, great news for my tanning prospects (ok, freckles, same difference).

When on warm weather training camps, I keep the weekly set up the same. The warm weather allows the athletes to run faster and their lack of work/university/college means they recover better. I never understand it when athletes go away and change and/or increase their training, consistency is key in our game. We also have the benefit of Gareth being trackside every session and available for extra treatment if and when required.

The one element of the training week I alter slightly on training camps is the rest days. I have learnt over the years that rest days on training camps cannot always be as useful as they are meant to be. Usually an athlete would be at work/university/college on their rest days at home, whereas on training camps they may just sit and do nothing all day. So, I now structure active recovery days to keep the athletes moving on their days off. This trip we had a session in the pool which involved walking drills, various jumps and finished with some races. The session lasted 45mins and worked very well.

The most challenging aspect of training camps is spending lots of time with people you wouldn’t normally spend time with. There is no easy solution to this. I always advise athletes (and coaches) to make sure they spend time by themselves if they need too. Speak with family/friends at home and try and get out of the apartment/hotel to relax. Our group have introduced a great exercise to help us with this group cohesion, more on this topic another time.

The group found the camp very beneficial. The athletes had a good block of training, refreshed their mind and body ready for indoors, picked up a sun tan and learnt they can go a whole meal WITHOUT using their phones. I ban phones when we eat out together. If anyone uses their phone during dinner, they pay for me meal and drinks.

I will look to take the group back next January. For now, it’s time to finish the indoor season on a high and get ready for our next trip to Tenerife in April.

European Under 23's: Q&A With Clieo Stephenson

At the European Under 23 Championships in Bydgoszcz West London Track & Field had representatives both competing and coaching. Head sprints & Hurdles coach Laura Turner-Alleyne was a member of the coaching staff and sprinter Clieo Stephenson was a member of the 4x100m relay team. After the championships we sat down with Clieo to ask her a few questions on her experience at the championships.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today Clieo. What were your immediate thoughts when you found out you had been selected for the team?

I had very mixed emotions when being selected for the team. Due to an injury that developed at the beginning of the season, I found it difficult to achieve my goal of running in the individual 100m race. However, despite not running as fast as I had hoped this season, it was still an honour to be selected for the relay and I was excited to experience my final age group international championships.

Did you have to change any of your plans for the season and if so how did you do this?

My training with Laura is extremely planned, so I had known what my season looked like way before the season had even begun. However, being selected for various teams including being invited to run in Geneva, Switzerland, were things we were not able to plan for. This meant I was running on weekends I had not planned to run on and having to pull out of other competitions to do so. When invited or selected for other competitions, Laura and I would always ensure that changing my plan would benefit my season. If it would benefit my build up to the European Championships, then I would adapt and fit my schedule around that change.

Was this your first time competing for Great Britain at an age group championships?

No, I had been lucky enough to represent Great Britain at the European U20 Championships in Rieti, Italy in 2013 on an extremely successful team! The experience however, was very different this time round with the athletes allowed to be more independent!

How helpful was it having your coach as a member of the team staff?

I loved having my own personal coach there with me as it allows me to treat the championships just like any other competition I would do in the UK. With Laura being an experienced athlete herself, she understood the demands and was able to share her experience with both myself and the other members in the team. It’s great because Laura is able to monitor my build up and suggest any changes or adaptations to my preparation when she is at the championships too.

What did you find most difficult about being away?

The most difficult thing for me is getting used to a different bed! If it’s not what you are used to, it can be difficult to get sleep on the first couple of nights. I would suggest bringing your own pillow just in case the pillows are not to your taste! Also, the food in other countries can often be not to the standard you would hope when you are competing. However, in Poland the food at the hotel was great!

What would your advice be to any young athletes that have ambitions of competing for Great Britain?

My advice would be to not change anything that is working for you. To be world class and represent your country, it does not mean doing different things that may work for one person and not for you. Everybody works and thrives differently, so if it works for you, keep doing it.

How are you going to use your experiences from the championships to help you continue moving forward with your training?

I am going to take the positives of being selected to motivate me going forward in my training. Although I may not have got the selection that I wanted, not being able to compete to my best ability and still be selected is promising. It excites me for the future as I know that when I am able to fulfil my potential, I will be exceeding my expectations and goals!

Full-Time Sprints & Hurdles Coaching

WLTF is set to launch it's first full-time Sprints and Hurdles squad.


Following three successful seasons working with over 30 athletes, Lead Sprints Coach - Laura Turner-Alleyne is now directing her focus and expertise to coaching a group of athletes dedicated to training full time.

Turner, an Olympian and GB Team relay coach is set to lead a squad of committed athletes through a comprehensive, individualised, programme designed to maximise performance.

The new squad will train 5 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday) from 10am – 1pm. Track and gym sessions will be programmed with the individual in mind, and supervised throughout. With speed at the heart of the training programme, Laura and her team will ensure athletes develop technical mastery, as well as the physical prerequisites for success.

Therapy support will be provided by Gareth Degg (lead therapist WLTF) who has already had an amazing impact on the quality of athlete movement and performance in his 3 years in post. Gareth is an Osteopath and Movement specialist, and his philosophies around movement and performance are a common thread in Laura’s training programme.

The WLTF core values will be at the heart of the squad:
